Gwyrosydd Primary

‘Working together to unlock our potential’

Welcome

Welcome to Gwyrosydd Primary.

We are a busy but friendly school, with lots going on. This website aims to give you a taster of the school, as well as providing up to date information for parents, pupils and the wider community.

We hope that you enjoy your visit to our website, and that you find the information you are looking for. Please feel free to contact the school direct with any queries you may have.

Gwyrosydd Primary School is part of the Swansea Local Education Authority. We are a two-form entry primary school. Our children usually start school after their third birthday and stay with us until they reach eleven.

The school is situated on the side of a hill, in large grounds that have impressive views of Swansea Bay, the surrounding area of Treboeth and the South Wales countryside beyond. The grounds offer a wealth of learning and play experiences for the children, through the natural resources such as the sloping banks and large number of trees, as well as through the stimulating outdoor equipment provided in the Early Years playground, a tyre park for the older children and a play-trail for junior aged pupils. There are three large hard surface play areas for playtime use, and during dry weather the children fully use the large grassed playing fields. We are extremely proud of our children, our heritage, our links with the local community and the after school activities that take place here.

At Gwyrosydd Primary School we share a commitment to the development of the whole child. We are a Level 2 Rights Respecting School Award holder and we are committed to the 42 articles of the United Nations Charter for the Rights of the Child, UNCRC. We believe that all the articles are important, however there are two key articles on which we base our school.

Article 28 states thatAll children have the right to a primary education. Discipline in schools should respect children’s dignity. For children to benefit from education, schools must be run in an orderly way – without the use of violence. Any form of school discipline should take into account the child's human dignity. Young people should be encouraged to reach the highest level of education of which they are capable.

Article 29states that Children’s education should develop each child’s personality, talents and abilities to the fullest. It should encourage children to respect others, human rights and their own and other cultures. It should also help them learn to live peacefully, protect the environment and respect other people. Children have a particular responsibility to respect the rights their parents, and education should aim to develop respect for the values and culture of their parents.

The school works hard within the community and maintains a positive high profile. There are excellent links with a range of outside agencies; embracing the expertise and encouraging professional development of all staff e.g. Swansea Metropolitan University. The school has made significant investment in improvements to the school building and learning environment, both inside and out, particularly in ICT, over the past 4 years. We pride ourselves on being a ‘Learning Family’ in the sense that we are supportive and encouraging of all our ‘family members’ and have processes that ensure all stakeholders have a voice in decision-making. We aim to ensure that everyone has the same chances and opportunities irrespective of race, sex, class or disability. We believe that by working together and consulting with all our stakeholders, everyone feels valued and included - a key factor for our school improvement.

It has always been our firm belief that it is a basic entitlement of all pupils to leave the school both numerate and literate and so the school will do all it can not only to ensure this right but to far exceed it, so that pupils are not only able to read and write but that they are confident, independent learners who can think laterally and are able to make the most of opportunities that present themselves.

The curriculum we aim to provide balanced and enriched so that it takes into account the developmental needs of all our pupils. In this way everyone will gain a sense of achievement whether it is academically, in the sporting arena, artistically, musically or in some other area in which they show talent.

Our school is founded on an inclusive, healthy and safe learning environment where children’s naturally inquisitive nature, their enthusiasm to investigate and their eagerness to learn where learning is fun, is used to provide them with opportunities to prosper and achieve. Our school strives to provide for their needs and celebrate their achievements and help them fulfil their potential. Our school community is built on mutual respect as we firmly believe that by encouraging respect for others and ourselves, children develop caring attitudes that will help them to be successful in their later lives.

Staff work together as a team in facilitating a dynamic learning environment where everybody is learning together. A clear structure for progression and continuity that is clearly focused on what children know now and need to learn next provides the spine for learning and teaching throughout the school. Our teaching will be of the highest standards. The sustained and continued professional development of all staff will be central to maintaining these high standards.

In order to prepare children for the technologically advancing world in which they live we ensure that ICT is incorporated across the curriculum and that equipment is updated regularly. Focused learning ensures that pupils are aware of the opportunities modern technology offers them and enable them to use it with increasing confidence and creativity.

Our school listens to and strives to meet the aspirations and expectations of its partners and stakeholders, working closely with parents, the Local Authority, local businesses, the community and other schools. Our school works in close partnership with parents encouraging them to take a full and active part in the life of the school and their child’s education.

Above all…learning will be fun…children will be engaged, challenged and successful. Everyone at our school will have a sense of purpose and even greater sense of achievement!
