‘Working together to unlock our potential’

Rights Respecting School

Gwyrosydd is a Level 3 - Gold Award Right Respecting Schools Award holder

The award, pioneered by UNICEF is running in over 1000 schools throughout the UK. One of the greatest challenges that schools face is to define a clear set of values – not just rules - that has been developed with the full involvement of the school community and is actively upheld by pupils. UNICEF UK’s RRSA initiative helps schools to use the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) as the values framework that enables this to be achieved.

Evidence gathered from schools taking part has shown that when the values of the UNCRC underpin the ethos and curriculum of the school they have a significant, positive impact on important aspects of child well-being and school improvement. They also have a positive effect on the relationships, teaching approaches, attitudes and behaviour of everyone involved. Teachers have reported improved self esteem, pupil’s improved moral development, improved behaviour and relationships including reductions in bullying and exclusions along with improved attendance, positive attitudes towards society and a reduction in prejudice, pupil development as ‘global citizens’.

Our involvement in the award to date has certainly supported our belief in these benefits and has empowered our children to take the first steps in achieving our mission statement… ‘Working together to unlock our Potential'
